Sunny

Kalli and I joined Nik and Mitch up on the Sky Deck. We sat at the bar like we had the first night we met, in the same seats where I had discovered she could read minds and had told her I was psychic. The same knot that had filled me with dread had blossomed into full-fledged doom and gloom.

Murder tended to do that to me.

Eddie was right. We needed all the help we could get. The thought of a killer still walking free around the ship terrified me, even more so now that I was a mother. I had to stop being reckless and think about my children.

Granny Gert was too old to raise them, and there was no way I wanted my own mother to bring them up. Babysit whenever we needed them, yes. Raise them permanently? No way. My parents were too old as well.

I should have made a will before this trip.

I would have designated my best friend Jo and her husband Cole. They had twin boys, and they were amazing parents. Or Jo’s cousin Zoe and her husband Sean were expecting a daughter. I just knew they were going to be great parents as well. I wrung my hands, letting my doubts fill me with anxiety.

Why had I insisted on this trip?

If anything happened to us, how our children turned out in the future would be all my fault. Mitch would be mad at me for eternity, and I would be forced to haunt everyone. I should have just stayed home instead of rocking the boat, literally.

“You okay?” Kalli asked, her hair still green but a little more blond and a little less neon now. “I recognize the beginning of a panic attack more than anyone.”

I took a deep breath. “I’m okay. This case is just getting to me.”

“I agree. Eddie reminding us that we still have a killer on the loose hit home.”

“Ladies, how have you been liking the cruise so far?” Frankie asked with a wide smile and a twinkle in his eyes. “Looks like it’s been eventful.” He eyed Kalli’s hair.

“It certainly has been.” Kalli ran a hand over the strands.

“I heard you were a hit at your show. I had no idea you two were so gifted.” He winked, and it was obvious he thought we were fakes.

“We’re always up for a little fun,” I said.

“And the tips don’t hurt, I imagine.” He chuckled.

“People love a good party trick.” Kalli laughed, playing along.

She’d told me the reason she didn’t tell people in her hometown of Clearview Connecticut that she could read minds was because it wasn’t her profession, and she hadn’t been born with the ability. It was caused by a freak accident. She didn’t think anyone would believe her, and her family would worry about her even more than they already did. She didn’t want anyone to freak out and not trust her anymore, thinking she was always reading their minds. So, she found it more useful if people didn’t know about her ability.
